Vitamin D

It promotes the absorption of calcium from the intestines and also reduces calcium loss in the urine. Vitamin D is poorly supplied in all diets.

Sun light is the major factor affecting vitamin D status. Sun exposure to hands, arms and face for 15 minutes per day is believed to be adequate to provide sufficient amounts of vitamin D.

People with dark skin or those who live in cloudy area need increased exposure.

If sun exposure is inadequate vitamin D supplements are recommended.
